Fraud prevention and scam warnings
Fraud involving payment companies is increasing. Because Shieldpay processes high-value settlement payments, our name has been used by fraudsters to make fake invoices and payment requests look credible.
This page covers the scams we're aware of, what to do if you've been targeted, and where to get help.

Warning: fraudsters are using Shieldpay's name
We are actively receiving reports of a scam in which fraudsters use Shieldpay's name and branding to add legitimacy to fake invoices and payment requests. The goal is to trick people into sending money to accounts that are not ours.
Do not send money to any account claiming to be Shieldpay until you have verified the payment details directly with us.
To check whether a payment request or bank account details are genuinely ours:
Email: fraud@shieldpay.com
We will confirm whether the details you've been given are legitimate. If you're unsure, do not send funds until you hear back from us.
Think you've already been scammed?
If you believe you've sent money to fraudsters using Shieldpay's name, or you've shared personal or financial details with someone impersonating us:
- Email us at fraud@shieldpay.com — we need to know so we can track impersonation attempts
- Report it to Report Fraud at reportfraud.police.uk — this is strongly advised and is the official route for reporting fraud to UK police
- Contact your bank immediately if you've transferred money — they may be able to stop or recover the payment under the APP fraud reimbursement scheme
The sooner you act, the better the chance of recovery.
Fraud Recovery Fraud — a second wave to watch for
If you've already been a victim of fraud, be aware of a specific follow-up scam called Fraud Recovery Fraud. Criminals target previous victims by posing as recovery services, law firms, or regulators, claiming they can get your money back — often in exchange for an upfront fee. They cannot. It is a second scam targeting people who have already lost money.
Types of fraud to be aware of
The following are the most common fraud methods used against people involved in payment processes:
Invoice and payment request fraud Fraudsters send fake invoices using real company names and logos. Always verify bank account details directly with the company — not using contact details on the invoice itself.
Payment diversion fraud guidance — Report Fraud
Clone firm fraud Criminals set up fake websites or communications that closely copy a legitimate, FCA-regulated firm. Always check the FCA Register to verify a firm's details independently.
Phishing Fraudulent emails, texts, or calls designed to get you to click a link, enter personal details, or transfer money. Legitimate companies will not ask for passwords or PIN numbers.

Investment scams If someone is using a payment process as part of an investment opportunity that promises high returns, this is likely a scam. Legitimate settlement payments are initiated by your solicitor, not by someone who approached you.
